Lefty was wide awake.
He was tired. He hadnât been getting enough sleep. Every little noise made him sit up in alarm, just in case someone was trying to break into his apartment to get to Kinley.
Brain was being very careful in searching for answers, and so far hadnât been all that successful. Cruz Livingston, the FBI agent, was driving up to Killeen from San Antonio in a few days to hear Kinleyâs story firsthand. Lefty had no idea what the next steps would be, but he vowed to stay by Kinleyâs side every step of the way.
Lefty had never lived with a woman before. Had never had the desire to. But he had to admit, coming home after working all day was a hell of a lot better with Kinley in his apartment. Her shy, welcoming smile made all his aches and pains from working out with the team disappear. He loved puttering around his kitchen with her. She wasnât the best cook, but then again, neither was he.
Sheâd sworn that she was perfectly happy hiding out in his place, and he hadnât seen any signs that she was lying.
Kinley didnât seem to care about anything most women did. She hadnât mentioned needing to buy anymore clothes; sheâd only brought a few outfits with her, but seemed to enjoy wearing his oversize T-shirts with her leggings. And, of course, he wasnât going to complain. He loved seeing her in his clothes. Maybe it was the caveman in him, but seeing his too-big T-shirt swimming on her made something deep inside him growl in approval.
She was perfectly content to sit in his apartment all day and amuse herself. She didnât seem to be going stir crazy in the least. She was a woman who was happy being by herself, and that was something he hadnât experienced before. He liked it.
The more he was around her, the more Lefty was intrigued, and the more the connection heâd felt in Africa and Paris grew. He loved talking with her about everything and nothing. Sheâd opened up about her childhood, and hearing more details had made his heart hurt. If ever there was a girl whoâd been begging for someone to love her, it had been Kinley.
When sheâd insisted, heâd told her some stories about his own family, and while it made him feel guilty that heâd been so blessed and spoiled, sheâd told him that it made her heart feel good to hear how happy his childhood had been.
It had only been a few days, but Lefty had no idea how heâd lived without seeing her every day of his life. She made him laugh, but she also calmed something deep within him.
But any calm heâd felt over the last few days was thrown out the window the second he pulled her into his arms on his couch.
Heâd touched her plenty. Hugs, an arm around her shoulder, putting his hands on her waist as he moved her out of his way in the cramped kitchen, but nothing compared to this.
